I did wonder if it's possible to trade all the way from gen I, (I missed out on the GBA generation when it came out). That isn't possible, the difference between II and III is the block. It's a shame because having the same pokemon from the beginning of the franchise would be something special.

although apparently you can get pokemon from the virtual console versions of gen I.

I still have most of my Gen 3 mons on current games.

Everything before that is lost though because transferring from gen 2 to gen 3 is a massive pain in the ass.

I pulled my original Red and Silver savegames via GB flasher and injected those saves into their respective VC versions on a homebrew 3DS. Traded them onto my second 3DS with bought VC versions and Bank connection, et voilà. Gen 1/2 Pokémon all the way up to USUM.

I have all of my main old partners from when I was a kid in Sapphire. They're still on my alt squad that I use in battles.

My Swampert, my Shiny Corsola, My Swellow and my Flygon.

It's a mix of several changes/additions during transfer from Gen 1/2 VC to Bank:

- Ability will be hidden ability if the species has one
- DVs are wiped away, three random IVs are certain 31s, three others are set randomly. Mew/Celebi have five 31s by default
- EVs will be reset to zero
- Nature is determined by current experience points
- Shininess is retained
- Gender is retained from Gen 2, Gen 1 Pokémon will have a random gender (lul)

I'm pretty sure gender transferring gen 1 mons is determined the same way gender was determined transferring gen 1 to gen 2, since pokemon did have DVs in gen 1.
