You're not using official art in the OP for a reason - it's not, by default, cute.
If anything it's like Sugimori went too far in this one case with his oversight - it's not quite cute, not quite cool and I can't even discern precisely why.
It's the only one who doesn't fit in with my cute, beautiful, or cool lists. It's not bad, it's not ugly... That's about it actually, I just don't know what it is, only what it isn't.
