I thought dubbing was chosen as a marketing way for kids to remember pokemon's names. Outside of that, it sounds plain dumb.

Onix does the same thing, it says its Japanese name, "Iwark"

Basically, with the cuter Pokemon it's obvious that they're saying their names, but the cooler and tougher ones have it toned down so it just sounds like grows and roars (by only saying a few syllables instead of their whole name)

It is, but Pokemon wasn't the first or last series to do it

But Pokemon saying their names is in both the Japanese and English versions
