But over time, the concept of legendaries just being very rare species that humans create mythology around has become more and more appealing to me.

There's no reason to add them to the team since you practically get them -and I hate using this term- forced onto you and there's nothing special about them but their surface values. I remember valuing promo pokemon cards lesser than their regular counterparts because they were a guaranteed card you'd get when buying the product instead of a lucky pull out of a random pack. I think that's comparable to the situation with legendaries, especially when they're advertised so heavily for the(ir) games. There's no "magic", nothing fascinating about them, but that might just be me not being a kid anymore.
