Let's be real, Charizard is literally trash and only the anime made it looks like a decent pokemon.

Blastoise had a chance to be more popular if it got even a small portion of the advertising and promotion that Charizard gets constantly but it's been neglecting forever now people don't care about it anymore.

Yes but they start with Squirtle because it gets through Viridian Forest and learns Bubbles faster than Bulbasaur and its Vine Whip.

While Nidoking is more popular choice, Squirtle is a close second and we are discussing the kanto starters, Nidoking can stay aside.

Blastoise was as if not more popular than Charizard until the following 3 things happened:

>Ash got a Charizard in the anime and it was his only evolved starter
>Charizard was the best card in the Pokemon TCG
>Charizard learned Fly in Yellow, giving it more HM utility over all the other starters
