Is it really necessary to base regions directly on real life places? Can't they be creative? Or is it an excuse of Masuda to spend all the time traveling?

Everything in fiction is based on something in reality. And this has been true of Pokemon since Gen 1. The first four regions are based on Japan, but then they moved abroad starting with Gen 5.

That's not what i meant.
The story of gen 5 is primarily based on taoism and european castles and knights are the enemy team.
Show me where exactly NY has castles and what percentage believe in taoism.
Unova is a mix of things and isn't a copy of NY.

Giving to the regions some references of our world, is something that makes them more memorable and unique for the audiance. And it also helps to developers on how they can manage that.

You don't understand the point, I'm not complaining about references to the real world, but that ecosystems are so generic, and lack any fantastic features that differentiate them from the real world.

And I don't think copying the city of Paris is really something that makes Kalos "unique".

Hasn't Pokemon taken on enough generic JRPG trite for you faggots?
Pokemon was conceived with a grounded setting contrasted by fantastical creatures. How set apart it is from the JRPG norm (until recently) has always been one of it's strengths.

I've always liked the real world parallels but I miss the times when it was more subtle. During gens 1-5 the Pokemon world felt like its own world, but with the underlying real-life basis making it feel more lively and immersive. The real world settings were there, but they weren't the main focus and this left more room for more original ideas and lore. From Kalos onwards they just throw the culture in your face every few seconds and try way too hard to remind you of the country you're in. Nowadays I really feel more like a tourist than a kid exploring the world.
