more complexity and choices to the battle system IS an improvement, more pokemon having stab moves and being viable IS an improvement
Yes, the old system worked but by gen 3 it was obvious that it was not very thought through and many pokemon were rendered quite useless by the type categories
The ONE upside to pre-split is that defensive pokemon could have specific types they resisted really reliably, but now it's a bit easier to target the lower defense AND super effective
