what else are you going to do on ariados, max hp on a bug/poison with those fat 70/70/70 defenses? at least running speed lets you outrun slow as balls mons so you can /maybe/ get webs+tspikes up instead of just one

Also if you want to play a meta with less generic 252/252/4 spreads play VGC.

the pool of eligible mons is usually tighter, so people run specific investments to counter specific opponents

I'm kind of pissed because I spent MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS breeding a shiny vespiuen, and smogon tricked me into making it timid. Now they recommend bold or some shit.

I'm not exactly going to be battling in PU, but probably against friends, or just battle spot. Should I just go 252 def. so at least I can survive some physical attacks?

No, if you want something that survives physical attacks, you train defenses in something with defensive power in it.

I know, but I'm GOING to use ariados, and I want it to be as viable as possible. I'm thinking instead of spreading it's thin stats across physical and special defenses, I can max it towards physical defense, then bring it in on physical attackers as long as they don't have stone edge, then hit them with foul play, and use utility moves

Tighter, yes. But knowing speed is important. I specifically run 76 Speed on my Groudon so I can outrun non-Scarfogre, other Groudon, and unboosted, non-speed natures Xerneas and Yveltal. It's real real specific, but sacrificing the +10 points in Atk (I run 180 vs 252 here) makes outspeeds worth it. The extra attack doesn't make 2HKOs any more likely to be OHKOs either.
