Games have improved exponentially and Gen 1 is now slower and clunkier than ever; the difficulty that you felt back then was from being naive and shitty movepools.

You can't even have a modern pokemon experience nowadays. Other series have rocketed past pokemon in terms of story, graphics, gameplay,(both casual and competitive) and poekmon is still plays like a game from 20+ years ago.

Pokemon's biggest strengths were monster collection and the ability to trade with other players.

As far as RPG plots there was either the stranded 16-bit plot. (Evil empire rules the world+religion is bad) or something like Super Mario RPG where nothing in the game was taken seriously. Pokemon didn't really fit either of those but the stetting and time period probably had something to do with that.

That's later gens with gen 1 pokemon. Like FR/LG or HG/SS. That's not gen 1, that's just gen 1 pokemon. If you wanted that, just play the current games with gen 1 pokemon. You can do that. The NPCs won't have gen 1 pokemon exclusively? I don't know why no one has made such a mod.

The special split in the physical special split make it impossible for me to ever go back to gen 1 unironically. Even with the red + + hack I can't sit down and get into it because of some of the really dumb mechanics of it.

If only Square Enix would try marketing it abroad. I suspect the 3DS games could've outsold the 3DS SMT games had they been brought over. Hell, Joker 2 could've done much better than it did if they had a) advertized it in the West, b) not waited a year and a half to localize it, and c) just brought over the Professional version that had already been out in Japan for half a year when DQMJ2 reached Western shelves.
