When Charizard lost in popularity to Greninja in Gen6 by a large margin, they made 2 anime specials for Charizard and gave it a role in the Ash anime just to beat Greninja then it got into Alolan as a taxi just to be always on TV and even got a movie.

Greninja, despite being voted #1 in Japan, didn't appear on TV or any animated medium or manga after Ash released it. While TPC's favorite dick went from #8 to #1 in the following years from the heavy shoving.

That Poll was official by TPC in Japan.

Greninja was voted #1 while Pikachu and Charizard were #3 and #8 respectively.

Greninja was too popular because of Smash and the anime.
