>>36753092>Every pokemon game is linearIn the sense of, you go from A to B to C sure. But the difference is making sure that there are different ways of getting from A to B. There was that guy having a mild autsim leak in the ORAS thread who brought up a good one. In RSE, after reaching petalburg and getting surf, you have to get back to mauville to reach the eastern half of hoenn. You can:
>Surf from petalburg to slateport, since briney is probably still in slateport.>Surf from odale straight to cycling road.>Take the rusturf tunnel back to verdanturfEven though you are effectively backtracking, the player has options to explore the water route and utilise surf. Remember rock smash exists and go through the tunnel pretty quick. Or, remember that one forgettable body of water in route 103 and take it over for the fastest route. No matter what they are experiencing *something* new and expanding on familiar territory. The straight A,B,C beats of gen 5's progression seems more like a set piece slideshow than a fully developed world. Hell, even gen 1 did map design better by having the league at viridian. Gen 6 had the same problem and while i can't say the same about gen 7, i put the game down after the first island, the point stands.
>>36753127>they have routes that are literal point A to B destinationsThis too, a meaningless side route with a rare pokemon in it, or a maze with a few dead ends and some free items as consolation. Little shit like that that make the progression less that a glorified walking simulator crossed with a boss rush.
Gen 5 had a lot of exploration options on a small scale, with its dungeons and such, but nothing really on a larger scale like hoenn.
Either way OP is a faggot, genwars are fucking stupid and gen 5's linear progression is indeed a flaw of the game that should not be ignored for the sake of drawing a black and white (excuse the pun) categorisation between things i like and things i don't.
