What appeals with mobile apps is: open platform with the ability to play whenever, wherever, and the perception of cellphones as superior to PCs and consoles because of that portability.
Lazy games like LGPE reinforce the mentality that mobile is superior because there are mobile games that look superior to that crap, with level design that is certainly more inspired and original.
Masuda is completely justified in fearing mobile. What he isn't justified for is the creative decisions with Pokemon. Pokemon has an advantage of shit like Candy Crush or Angry Birds in that it's a massive multimedia IP with fans that span across millennials and zoomers. That's a huge amount of goodwill that allows Pokemon to experiment around like Zelda does. Instead, games directed by him become MORE conservative and MORE infantile, like the preexisting brand doesn't exist except to serve as obscure fanservice.
