You wouldn't make one of the new Eeveelutions one of the new types for marketing purposes if you could find a way to make it work? They hardly changed anything about it, the fact that it was poison to begin with indicates an emphasis on underhanded tactics (think Koga), the association with moonlight is just one part of its design and mostly to compliment Espeon (and yet almost nobody considers psychic the light type).

Neither Espeon or Umbreon could possibly fit the Steel type. Poison -> Dark isn't a big switch for a Pokemon that barely looked Poison to begin with.

Except ghost is the darkness type. It has more than twice as many darkness themed moves than dark.
Zoroark and Darkrai aren't ghosts, so their signature moves were given dark type for stab.

A type can be themed around something even if other types have similar themes. Mega Punch is a Normal move. Bullet Punch is a Steel move. Does this mean Fighting type doesn't involve punching?

This is sort of a silly argument because you're basically writing off exceptions, and yet the Dark type moves that have to do with literal darkness are mostly few and far between, just like the fighting moves that are Normal type are few and far between. Most Darkness moves are Ghost type. A few are Dark type. Yes, this doesn't mean they don't have similar themes. But Dark is still before all else the evil type.

Yes, actually. Fighting is more about straight-up martial arts than simple punches. Fighting type punching moves have their typing for being part of a systematized fighting style such as boxing or karate, not for just being a punch.

The Sudowoodo's design is that it is "fake tree" so Rock type fit very well because has pretty much reversed weaknesses and resistances of Grass type

Dark is super effective against Psychic because cheating catches plans off guard (aka Sucker Punch), and is immune to Psychic for basically the same reason.
This is also why Dark is weak to Fighting.

"Dark is darkness" won't explain its type either

I think that Absol is dark because is connected to evil and that makes him have visions of evil. It also has big dark movepool (maybe its just for STAB) but I think it became harsh to people who hated it for bringing disasters.
