Infernape is by far the best starter for in-game use and the few fire types that can be found crush it in Sinnoh.

Infernape is only the best in the fact that it's one of the only fire pokemon in the game. Despite that all the starters in Sinnoh are pretty much equal when playing the game. Not even joking

Fire Pokemon distrubution has been shit till like gen 6
seriously look at it
Gen 1 was fine but for the most part they were locked till late game besides the two fire canines
gen 2? Magby if you're lucky or growlithe
3? 3 fucking slow ass fire types or vulpix again
5 was a little better with the monkey being early but everyone hates them. You get duramaka mid game with litwick a little bit after.Then nothing till fucking heatmor and that's if you didn't know to go back to get larvesta

you're missing the point. if it has heatproof, a fire move is exactly the same as a bug, dark, or ghost move. and even then, neutral is fine. bronzong really isn't that threatening outside of human hands.

I think at least comparatively gen 5 is pretty alright. BW2 probably improved it further, but I can only say for sure that the original Unovadex had at least a -respectable- spread of fire-types, even if they still weren't what you'd call abundant.

As much as I'd like to pick Chimchar as my starter in D/P/Pt to cover the horrific lack of Fire types in the game, Turtwig is canon and Chimchar pairs way better with Barry, and Piplup with Dawn.

In-game is pretty easy anyway. Infernape would just make it a complete cakewalk.

In DP your only options are the Snover and Sneasel lines, meaning there's 4 total. Chimchar line and Ponyta line make 5.

Still only two fully evolved Pokémon for each line. It's not like you're choosing between Chimchar, Monferno, Infernape, Ponyta, and Rapidash. You're choosing between a Chimchar that will eventually be an Infernape, or a Ponyta that will eventually be a Rapidash.
