You're getting too hung up with them calling it mainline, while ignoring them referring to next year's effort and the ones that came before (RBY/SM/USM/whatever Gen you were born into) as Core. It's mainline, as it's set in a region they made, based off a game they made. But the fundamental differences in the mechanics of LGEP and the Core games stopped them calling it core for a reason. With the multiverse now a thing, it's mainline side-stories or Universes. But it's not Core, they don't consider it Core so it can only be a side game entry in that case.
