I liked when the games still had hidden shit in them, Mirage Island was like a homage to those old game secrets about locations that didn't exist or you could only find by walking X amount of tiles. It's just a cool secret you can brag to your friends about, same as when the only way to encounter shinies outside of Gyarados in Gen II was through random chance. People complain that it's bullshit because the island had nothing on it of import but that was the point as well- if it had had a lot of exclusive Pokemon but was insanely hard to get to, people would've bitched about it.
Gen III was cool about that kind of thing, the cryptic Regis and the Mew truck in FRLG were the same idea.
