Out of 100% of people that would buy merch, in both demographics, the older demographic is closer to 100% than the younger one to buy anything because, unlike the younger ones, they get to decide how to spend their money, whereas in the case of children you have to sell the product to both the child and the parent, and then hope that the parent doesn't have anything more important to do with the money.

And parents usually buy pirated games or lend their cellphones or tablets to their children. Masuda doesn't know how to target audience and he's only relying on the massive amount of whales this franchise has.

That's not OP's point. Kids are not going to buy EVERYTHING. The idea is that even if you make a game catering to an older audience (BW) they will fail because the older audience is extremely picky and will hate you because "it's not what I wanted" (then, when nostalgia kicks in, claim they always loved it). By contrast, make a game catering to kids (LGPE) and kids will buy it and like it.
