first of all, gen 5 is far closer to savers than tamers thematically. even then, its story is watered down compared to savers.
second of all, pokemon has never even come close to tamers' maturity, character development, or storytelling on any level.

I was surprised that the lack of older pokemon in gen 5 was a selling point because I've always only played with the pokemon of the region I'm playing, ever since Johto introduced new pokemon.

Tamers isnt hated so much as unknown. Digimon genwunners arent as vitriolic as Pokemon genwunners. It mostly boils down to "I only know the first season of Digimon and dont care about the others" rather than "I only know the first gen of Pokemon and everything else is a piece of shit because muh childhood!!!!!"

I've seen very few people that have this mindset. I've seen more people that find newer designs super cool looking than anything.

Digimon Tamers was a legitimately good anime, did not match well with the regular themes of the series, and it freaked me out as a kid. Black and White was a legitimately good game, matched well with the regular themes of the series while giving it a fresh new twist, and it freaked me out as a teenage, in a good way.

I fucking loved how it trivialized Adventures and Ryo simply felt like another character for the main cast that received some deep attention because he had even more experience with Digimon than Rika, that is at the time the show aired and before I read about the influence of Bandai in the writing room and the nuisance it was for Chiaki Konaka but the fact that the mandatory Ryo cameo could manage to fit in naturally with the plot makes this season even better in my book.

I agree. Both Tamers and Gen 5 tried something unconventional to the series and didn't follow on their past entries like Tamers having little to no connection to Adventure and 02, Gen 5 having no connection to other gens, especially gen 1. Both were like a restart to how we knew both franchises.
Also both of them have this gritty, urban tone to them and was generally more serious.
