What was the point of the Island Scan Pokemon?

They serve no purpose in the context of the story and are not explained at all in any detail in the story at all. Why are they Alola?

Gamefreak likes daily event stuff to keep people coming back.
An excuse to get people to use the qr feature.
Another way to offer more pokemon without completely and unrealistically have tons of pokemon in every area

I've always liked this shit. Sure gamefreak could just have like 20 species appear in every patch of grass, but shit like honey trees/fishing/finding pokemon in rocks/etc is kind of refreshing and adds variety. No idea why they got rid of swarms

Makes me sad. Also USUM's island scan had way less interesting mons, just starters and Gen 1 Pokemon for the most part. Nothing particularly unique like Vigoroth or Klink.
