4, genIV is when the physical/special split for moves was introduced; and to date is the best gen to feature the split.
3, genIII was finally a proper sequel without rehashing from the previous title
6, genVI has a some problems, but it introduced online play, more straight forward IV farming, and a graphical jump
1, genI, being the original game, holds up pretty well; it can even be played glitchless with titles like Fire Red.
2, genII introduced a fair share of good new pokemon, features like breeding and hold items, and gave us shinies; however, rehashing genI as the second half of genII was weak shit
5, genV is when pokemon design started flying off the rails, I personally remember playing genV and wondering why it looks like a different tiny monsters game stylistically
7, genVII is a horrendous pile of shit, the absence of gyms wasn't novel, it just made the story boring; features like pokemon ride were obnoxious to use and overall inconvenient compared to the classic bicycle; furthermore, z moves were unnecessary power creep, and ultra beasts were additional unnecessary power creep on top of that; lastly, the pokepelageo is an utter failure of a feature, this feature fundamentally misses the mark on actually playing the game, it's a solid step backwards from genVI endgame training in every conceivable way; I guess I'll also mention that festival plaza is so useless and dumb that I forgot it existed until just now
