And I stopped coming by here after posting regularly for years after I realized that many people starting to post more were people who had started with gen 3 and I felt like I was in the minority. I only ever really lurk now just to see other opinions on tcg stuff or leaks.

Despite the fact that Gen 6 and Gen 7 are obviously the most mechanically inferior games in the series my most hated remains gen 3 for moving the series from a sequel based approach to an iterative approach that focused on replacing things from the previous games over constantly building on their foundations and making cut features a series standard from that point forward.
Gen 3 killed any chance of Pokemon having an ambitious core game ever again and set the series down a path where it would eventually collapse under it's own weight (what we're seeing now), there are good, even great games after Gen 3 ruined the series direction, but I wouldn't call a single one ambitious.

Gen 3 could have built off of what Gold and Silver built off of Red and Blue, but instead it opted to cut features, replace route 1 shitmons with generic brand alternatives, and have a legendary with the exact same ocean based lore as a legendary from the previous generation. Threw out everything in favor of doing Kanto with a different coat of paint every gen.

Unsurprisingly, Masuda was behind this shit.

While we’re all shitting on Gen 3, I will always be salty that it was the only gen that didn’t allow you to transfer Pokémon from the previous iteration. Even worse the 200 Pokémon had a bunch of shitmons included that were less than ideal.
The games would have been much better if they had even some limited connectivity.

When breeding pokemon, I fly to a more appropriate location right before an egg hatches. I take design, typing, lore and natural habitat of the soon-to-be hatched pokemon into account when deciding on a location.
For example, if I'm playing Emerald and I have a Torkoal egg, then I fly to Lavaridge Town and hatch it there. If I have a Scyther egg in FRLG, I hatch it in either the Safari Zone or Viridian Forest.
And yes, I know how autistic this sounds.

It sucks that gamefreak removes features every generation but it helps give each game it's own identity and makes the repetition less noticeable. The reason why every romhack gets boring after the first few hours is due to almost everything being based on the gen 3 engine.

Used to do this to all of my RNGed breeds back in gen 4 when I was heavily into breeding, but I stopped after I realized the hatch locations don’t carry over to the next generation. And then the pentagon rule further made my old, carefully crafted collection obsolete.

I get what you're saying how it wasn't sequel based but it was, every gen worked forward just in a new place. gen 2 was already rebranding early game mons and the only thing lugia and kyogre have that are similar is that they live under water.

There is a lot of truth to this sentiment on the whole, but very point-by-point. A lot of features ARE made series standards every game or re-implemented in functionally similar ways (phone rematches/Trainer's Eyes/VS Seeker), and while we have too many Route 1 birds and rodents you'll also find plenty of new Pokemon trying new stat spreads and type combos. It is easy to point out where Game Freak misses opportunities, but rarely does anyone articulate the series potential. Last time someone asked it drowned in semantics about exploration being hollow and battle facilities being more of the same with different gimmicks.

Cut features refers to the cross gen connectivity more than anything else. Shit was absolutely unforgivable. Basic shit like day/night being gone on top of that was just adding insult to an already shit situation of having large quantities of Pokemon unavailable for years. Hoenn and future Pokemon games (barring BW2) are exactly iterative and not sequels that build on what came before. Hoenn throws shit out, future games throw Hoenn shit out, and the cycle never fucking ends. There's also that everything gen 3 and up copied the gameplay loop of Kanto shamelessly.

Hoenn wasn't a drastic enough change to justify the departure from the rest of the series. If they had done something ballsy like base Hoenn off of double battles or actually overhaul mechanics, it would have been justified but for god sakes Gen 4 made more drastic mechanical changes to the series by a long shot and managed connectivity and consistency with previous games that Hoenn failed utterly on. Gen 3 is just typical Masuda "haha making a game is hard" bullshit that ended up setting standards for the series that enables even more Masuda bullshit today.

This is a legitimately reason to be mad at current Gamefreak

Having access to the other Pokémon is easily the best thing to do while having a variety of new Pokémon for the main playthrough

Hoenn was a huge change introducing stats abilities double battles and an entire region that was unlike anything we had till then

funny enough gen 4 is when everything you said started to happen actually went down. besides the physical/special split it's just another region like Kanto and Johto but with all the personality gone. not only was it the same exact gameplay with less double battles it was even slower and worse to slog through. if you're looking for the games that set pokemon down the wrong path it would be sinnoh, even though Unova tried it's best to get away from all of that afterwards

The battle frontier is definitely nice, no denying it. But the availability problem in Gen 3 gimps it, you have to jump through hoops and own several games and even console peripherals to get your hands on most of the existing Pokemon at that point. Team building for it is a nightmare. That, combined with the state split a gen later makes me prefer the gen 4 frontier greatly despite having less facilities.
Also, even in emerald, you lose the post-elite four single player that didnt require breeded superpokemon that GSC offered with Kanto/Red, and the battle zone in sinnoh offered after it, and gen 5 after that. Or even Sevii that gen for FrLg.

Also, I don't find Hoenns exploration to be very good, featureless dark spots on the water and the ass backwards regi puzzle being two of the worst offenders.

Double battles are so scarce that there's no justifying putting something double battle oriented like helping hand on your Pokemon for the playthrough. If they had done something like make single/double an option in the menu for battles like switch/set that you could do for every battle gen 3 would maybe have a change that justified a departure but despite hardcore Pokemon players preference for double battles gamefreak has never treated it as anything more than a tacked on gimmick. It's implementation in every Pokemon single player is fucking awful.

I really miss XY's heyday because it was fun to breed mons and exchange breeding rejects to others. It made me happy to get something with 4 IV just because I knew I'd be able to get something with good IVs within a matter of a few eggs most of the time. It's kind of sad how quick injecting ruined that.

While I'm not interested in LGPE, I'm cautiously optimistic about next gen since I think it could be fun playing it on the Switch, especially with having multiple save files with different profiles allowing something I've wanted a long time.

The most enjoyment I've gotten out of a Pokemon game in years is Pokken, and I wish it did better.

The actual hardware is very promising for a Pokemon game. It makes me really hope that by some miracle it doesn't blow dick.
The loss of the second screen will suck, but the functionality of being able to play on the TV, or in tabletop mode, or with one of those clips that can hold it for you in bed sounds amazing.

Like, imagine just holding one of the joycons to control movement while you're hatching eggs instead of the whole handheld, with the switch in tabletop mode. Comfy.

Mega evolution was my favorite part of XY and I hope they bring them back in future games. I don't mean the way SM did either, by having them be ignored until the post game. New ones for both old and new Pokemon would be great.

digimon and smt have always had better monster designs than pokemon.
pokemon will always sell a lot of merchandise to kids with their design approach, but they will never have a monster as cool as beelzemon or matador.

Gen 7 is genuinely one of the best gens in the entire franchise on all fronts, sure it was easy but gen 6 was far worse, and the story is also one of the best core Pokemon has ever done second only behind Gen 5.

With Beezlemon and Matador I look at them and think "those are cool"
With a Pokemon I look at them and say "I want one, I'm going to go get one of those"
If they're less animal and more human that "I want to make one of these mine" element just doesn't kick in. I kinda feel like that might also happen to people who don't like objectmons, to be desu.

That's fair. This is how I feel about humanoid fighting types like Throh and Sawk, plus Mach and the Hitmons to a lesser degree.
On the other hand, I love Hawlucha, Breloom, Heracross, Lucario, Mienshao and Mega Lopunny.

i think it just comes down to this, though. digimon and, to an extent, smt demons are your partners and protectors, so you probably want them to be badass motherfuckers. pokemon are closer to being pets (albeit superpowered ones), so it makes sense why people would want cuter-looking ones.
that doesn't totally apply all the time - everyone loves jack frost and mothman, after all - but it's close enough.

I'm honestly more interested in what little lore new entries into the series add more than I am the games themselves at this point, even though most of it is half-assed and will be ignored by the next generation. "Catching them all" is pretty damn easy outside of older eventmons, and not being able to just dick around online without running into a 12 year old with 6 legendaries they're too retardes to use or the most paint-bt-numbers meta teams killed my enthusiasm for battling.

I wanna know what the fuck the Entree is and why folks like Burnet aren't losing their shit about being able to just... walk into another universe. I wanna know more about the kingdom in Fiore and their deal with crystals. I wanna know who built the Mysteri Stage proper, and who visited Southern Island?

I'd also like to know what the fuck is with humans in pokemon. Like, are Psychics and Karate Guys just grouped because of brain and brawn, or is the reason one can juggle pokeballs with their mind and the other can brawl with their Pokemon linked? Z-Crystals seem just to be Necrozma's shattered body and energy sure, but then USUM ALSO implies that the trainer is actually giving their pokemon energy as well. Then we have Magearna, the Ultimate Weapon, and that shit in Oblivia, which pretty much means magic is ALSO a thing people can do? Hell, Mega Fug is just a lizard that hates ayyylmaos, but apparently human prayers and worship somehow trigger it's mega evolution.

I also wish the games would embrace some of the stuff we see in the movies more. Just give me a slightly more fantastical region where shit like Lawrence's flying ship exist ,or alternatively give me actual cities like Altomare and LaRousse City. Getting tired of shit like Oldale town which just exists because "pokecenter lmao"

I think Masuda changing Pokemon breeding is a good thing. I do not like that it sounds like he removed breeding.
Friendly rivals are okay as long as they have character development.
I like the anime better than the games, first 4 seasons.
I like Didgimon, Final Fantasy, and Phantasy Star better than Pokemon.
Charmeleon and Dragonair are my favorite Pokemon.

I used PKHeX to recreate all my PMD teams into the main games and created an elaborate headcanon to justify why they exist in the non-PMD world and how they interact with each other.
I get more nostalgic feelings for XY than any gen except RSE, even though I've played since RBY.
Gen 5 did literally nothing wrong.
