I'm playing Crystal and decided to trade my Weepinbell over to Blue to teach it Mega Drain and trade it back, and now the name rater isn't letting me rename it. It's not getting boosted EXP so it isn't counted as a traded mon. I don't know what's going on

I guess it will not fix it, but try putting the Weepinbell in the PC or/and restarting the game.

Yup this is a glitch. I recently put my Scyther from Yellow on Silver so it could get Wing Attack early (35 BP tho) and when I traded it back I couldn't rename it. I also did the opposite, I put a Beedrill from gen 2 onto gen 1, to give it Double Edge iirc, and I couldn't rename it after trading it back

Happened to me several months ago when I traded my Shiny Eevee to Yellow in order to evolve it sooner. Poor little gal never even got the opportunity to be nicknamed.
This is just a very poorly documented oversight

Any chance either of you could upload your save? From reading the disassembly (https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal/blob/master/engine/events/name_rater.asm#L81-L111) I think the only possibility is that the trade corrupts the OT name.
