Gen 3 hate is so weird to me. Hoenn is gorgeous. Going from Gold to Sapphire blew my mind as a kid. To this day, it's still by far one of most explorable regions.

That was the problem. Going from Gen 2 that builds on Gen 1 to 3 which completely disregards the other is jarring. It didn't help that they had no backwards compatibility and only a handful of old included Pokemon in the RS200. I hated RS as a kid because pretty much all of my favorites weren't in the games at all

As a kid, I still liked my copy of Ruby a lot and played it about as much as I used to play Gold, but I was still disappointed about things like a day/night system and an extra region after beating the E4 not being included. In retrospect, while GS was almost entirely steps forward, RS did take a couple steps back with its omission of these features.

Not sure what you mean by 'balancing'. I'm guessing you're talking about the level progression, with levels only really going up to like 45 the entire game and capping out there, even after you go to Kanto, and that is indeed a problem. As for this making Gen 2 worse than even Gen 1, I'd easily disagree. Over Gen 1, Gen 2 had way more to do and explore, more Pokemon to catch, a much, much meatier postgame (as opposed to the 1 dungeon from Gen 1), a lot of QoL improvements, and a much better presentation.

I wonder if it really was impossible. Maybe they could have found some way to use the Game Boy Player to transfer Gen 1/2 Pokemon to something like Pokemon Box, whereupon they could be withdrawn into a Gen 3 game? I know directly linking a GBC and GBA would be impossible, but surely something like that could have been achieved.

honestly they could make it work by doing a re-set in each region. You only take one Pokemon with you after beat the elite four or have to pick/capture a new starter. You would only get access to all of your Pokemon from the previous region after you've beaten the elite 4 in the newest one. Game-Freak could make this work but yeah...

I still remember the Gen 5 Hoenn remake vs Gen 6 war on /vp/ many years ago.
I argued that RSE was better off being remade later on the 3DS than the then-dying DS anyway, that it would do more justice to them. I constantly berated those who believed or wanted them to be the final Gen 5 games.
I'M SO SORRY, HOENNFAGS. It was a far more optimistic time, when we actually looked forward to the future of the series instead of dreading it.

Yeah, I think GSC definitely benefit from the existence of Kanto, and it adds a few hours to the game, but I don't think it really leaves much of an impact in the end. There just isn't enough to do there besides collect the Kanto badges, most of which are just sitting there waiting for you to go get them. The Kanto Gyms really ought to have been more of a challenge.

It's not like that, though. Johto was Johto and then Kanto got added on after Iwata's coding trickery freed up enough space to allow it. It's not like if Kanto weren't in the game, Johto would have been 2x bigger, unless they were willing to delay the game EVEN MORE to make Johto bigger with the newfound space on the cartridge.

Nighttime in GSC was pure comfiness that was unmatched until gen 4 returned. Nighttime in Pokemon games suck now, everything is brightly lit so it barely feels like it's night in game or lacks time specific music.

Alright, I think I get it now. GBC -> Box -> GBA. I sounds possible, but not really feasible for most people. Imagine explaining to someone that you needed a new console, plus an add-on and another game in order to bring approximations of your GBC mons to RS. Who knows how much Gamefreak knew about the development of the GC and the Game Boy Player or how far ahead Box was planned?

Yeah, it would have been impractical, but still, if it were possible, it would have been nice to see it done. If you want to transfer a Gen 2 Pokemon to Gen 7, you have to have
1. a 3DS
2. a copy of a Gen 7 game
3. a Virtual Console Gen 2 game
4. a Pokemon Bank membership
5. Poke Transfer installed on your 3DS
I know this isn't as much as having two entirely different consoles and all these different things, but GF seems to be okay with allowing the transfer of Pokemon through convoluted means nowadays anyway.

Ruby/Sapphire were, in a lot of ways, the first wave of Black/White. The vibe was very much 'starting fresh'. Lots of older Pokemon were out, there was very little connecting it to older regions, the anime had Ash get a new design, new traveling partners, almost entirely new Pokemon, there was no transferring Pokemon from Gen 2 to Gen 3, the TCG introduced several new moves and card types... the idea in a lot of ways was not 'sequel' but 'a new beginning'.

I agree that the amount of peripherals would have made this impractical, but keep in mind the e-Reader, which Nintendo was very big on around this time. Oftentimes the player would be expected to not only have an e-Reader, but to also have a second Game Boy Advance, a link cable, and a variety of random-pack cards which you'd scan several of to get a single reward.

Same. I wasn't too much a fan of Gen 2 because it was just... more of the same. R/S was new. It was fresh, full of color, details, animations, so many new and different Pokemon with so many unique areas. Gen 3 really brought me back into the series and I love it. Only genwunners hate Gen 3 cause it's not Gen 1 like Gen 2 was.

Idk, I personally think RSE's changes felt a lot more meaningful to the series then GSC's changes did

It's the lack of Abilities (a feature introduced in Gen 3) in Let's Go that bothers me the most. I don't feel *that* disappointed in the lack of held items (a feature introduced in Gen 2) in comparison
