Pokemon's battle system does have strategy though. Depth it is probably lacking, but strategy is definitely there, especially in doubles.

Rocket Episode opened the series up to the potential for a lot of crazy shit in future gens that I look forward to even if the series does get casualized, I'll always have SMT and online to hand my ass to me

Non usable enemies, even if they have to resort to robots to do so. Some of the best bosses in SMT are with demons you can't use.
Expansive dungeons and overworlds with a few optional and randomly generated ones, if Pokemon didn't regress after gen 5 we could have had this.
Ambush and preemptive attacks, I mean it's a general RPG thing but still, it's weird that Pokemon doesn't have it.
