Comparing BW1's early game Pokemon availability to BW2, DP (No Platinum), and the gameboy version of Gold and Silver (no Crystal)

One Starter
Unova Route 1 gives you Patrat and Lillipup
Unova route 2 gives you Purrloin
Dreamyard gives you one elemental Monkey (Grass is blocked off until after your first gym battle)
Only 5 Pokemon available to you at this point, not even enough to make a full team without duplicates.
GS:

Route 46 just off to the side of route 29 gives you Spearow, Jigglypuff, and Geodude

Route 31 gets you Bellsprout
Violet City has an in-game trade where you can get Onix for a Bellsprout
Dark Cave gets you Zubat and Dunsparce
Sprout Tower gets you Gastly
Ruins of Alph give you Unown but I’m not counting that because it’s useless
