gen 1 is bad because it's a rudimentary slog even compared to other game boy jrpgs. games like great greed and last bible ii came out several years before gen 1 and were still far better than gen 1, even though game freak spent six years developing it.

by jrpg standards, yes, they're all pretty bad.
by pokemon standards, gen 1 is the worst because it's the furthest away from what makes a jrpg good. although lgpe will be replacing it as the worst when it comes out.

How is the flattest, least environmentally diverse, melancholy region the best?

The Pokedex is as good as all of the others on average

The only characters that can be considered good are the rival and Giovanni. No one else is of any significance.

Nigger what are you talking about? Gen I was skewed and busted as fuck. If you had ANY of the following things, you were set for the rest of the game:
>Strong Psychic type (Alakazam or even Kadabra)
>Snorlax
>Any Pokemon with bind/wrap/fire spin
>Any fast Pokemon with high-crit moves
And the fact there were only one evolutionary line for Ghost/Dragons just made the Elite Four a joke. Lance might as well be a Flying-type trainer, and his team gets fucked by Rock-types and Agatha might as well just call herself Koga 2.0

Most parts of the battle system are bad. Pokemon hadn't figured out its own formula yet and the move pool was really shallow. However the game did have more freedom than modern games and the hand-holding was less obnoxious.
