Why only Japan? Who the fuck knows since the original sold over 3.5 million combined and sold about 100K more in NA than Japan.

The only side games that have sold better are the PMD: Explorers games (which is, of course, technically three units neither selling as well individually), Stadium, and Pinball and is the 20th best selling game in the series overall.

I'd say they must've thought tying the actually cards to them made more sense moneywise but even then there was over a decade of silence.

Because TCG was made as a filler game because of the constant GS delays, same thing happened to gen 4.
That's why Gen 1 and 3 had so many spin offs.

The real answer is because Pokemon clearly didn't consider the TCG game series worth continuing past the initial wave of Pokemania and didn't see much value in having more games made for the GBA. Either that, or Hudson Soft didn't want to make more games in the franchise, and since no other dev was stepping up to do them instead, the TCG games went away.
