I usually played as a male because my friends would make fun of me if I played as a girl. When it came time for Gen 6/7, I then played as a boy because I wanted to play as 'myself' by outfitting my character to look like me. It was quite enlightening to play as a girl in a playthrough of X to find they have far more customization options.

Only because I didn't have the option of playing as the girl, or was replaying a game after playing as the girl previously. I've nearly always picked the girl since the option was made available as I still find it something of a novelty after playing through Gen 1, Gold and Silver multiple times without being able to.
