Nintendo has stated many times that the reason they don’t give their main protags any personality is so the player has an easier way to put themselves into the protags shoes and, in effect, be the protag. I’m not really trying to defend Red but that’s the reasoning behind his lack of depth.

Japanese do this all the time in their games. Both Legend of Zelda games I've played had mute protag. IIRC, Cloud in FFVII is also silent.
Even if Nintendo and other companies don't say this, it's apparent this philosophy has been regarded as a correct one.

It's been a long time since the Japanese were actively making silent or blank protagonists, Zelda and Pokemon are one of the few series that still do it.
Most developers nowadays moved on from that years ago including Square and Nintendo.
Cloud isn't silent by the way and neither are Squall and Zidane.

That was absolutely the best thing about S/M. Since you aren't the protagonist, it doesn't matter if you fuck around along the way. Trying to catch that FUCKING pink fish isn't holding up the fate of the universe. It kept the stakes high for the storyfags who want that but kept it from being a dissonant experience for people who wanted a more casual pace to the plot.

And you got your own story in the postgame with the Ultra Beast shit. It was a nice set up that I hope we see more of.
