Gen 1 was what Gen 1 was, GF had no idea what they were doing and looking back the games are a mess. But for the day Gen 1 was incredible, why do you think Pokemania even happened? So that's excuseable. LFRF unfortunately had the bad timing of being released before Gen 4 could happen and really only existed to fix the gap between Gen 2 and 3. It didn't bring much to the table as a remake but was needed. Let's GO is a game based on a mobile game that's prime function is catching Pokemon and not really fighting. There's no reason to address the battle system if that game's audience doesn't really care for it. Honestly the only way to experience Kanto is Red or Blue. It's old, broken, grindy and monochrome but that's what Kanto was and that's what Kanto will always be.

That's what Romhacks are for, I'm sure there's a FRLG hack with physical/special split and fixed movepools. There's even an Emerald hack with Pokemon up to Gen 6, available from the beginning.

Pokemania owes itself more to the anime, trading cards, merchandise, and marketing than the games themselves. Many westerners at the time thought it was an anime first and foremost.

True. But speaking from personal experience, it was the game foremost which got random people invested in it. You'd have groups of kids just watching one kid play their hype as fuck new monster battling game at the local playground. The show was a hook for when you already were intrigued.

And the lack of 600+ pokemon, and the extremely lazy graphics, and the unispired recreation of Kanto, and the lack on proper online (which also costs $20) and the lack of wild battles and how they charge $50 for a shitty toy with mew and how they couldn't even be bothered to bring back a fuckton of old features but decided to keep fucking megas without abilities or hold items and the serious lack of postgame content and how it is missing shit that even FRLG and how they are charging $60 for a game that took remarkably less effort than every other mainline game.
Oh wow, turns out there's actually a lot of really shitty things about this cash-grab.
