I'm not saying VGC is perfect, it's complete shit too as all competitive Pokemon formats are but it's at least more tolerable than 6v6 singles. The only reason singles are the way the main games are played is because of tradition and little kids. The hardware couldn't handle 2v2 early on and when it was introduced in gen 3 they stuck with singles since it was just what people were familiar with. I can't think of many main stream turn based RPG games that only feature one party member fighting at a time aside from select sequences until you get more party members to fight with.
They experimented with a 2v2 focused game to see how people would like it and it was niche since it does require a little more thought and strategy. It's a lot easier for kids to have their starter spam one move through the entire game than it is to worry about KOing two Pokemon at once. I'm not saying games should go full doubles now but I wouldn't mind at all if they gave us more double battles and possibly a gym or two focusing on them.
