This is when the Pokémon movies lost traction although the animation and scenery are still great. Celebi is a really underwhelming poster mon compared to Mewtwo/Mew, Lugia/Legendary birds and Entei/Charizard. All those dope ass mon and the next movie has a Polly pocket neopet with mascara on the cover? gheyy

So about that movie... What's the deal with the many Celebi? What I told myself when I saw it is that it's the same Celebi that comes from different times to help itself. Maybe it what really happened, I saw a non English/Japanese dub

Not only was the movie shit (it's not that bad compared to some of the later ones, but it's the worst of the OS5 by some distance and was the first to rip off the first movie's death fake out) but the effect it had on the anime was probably at least in part responsible for the death of Pokémania in the west. Some executive bastard decided that Celebi was cute enough that they wanted it to start in a movie because merchandising, so it was 'decided' that Celebi wouldn't be shown in the anime, forcing them to abandon the planned resolution of the GS Ball arc, which had been going to contain a Celebi that followed Ash around Johto for a while. Because there plans for Johto's plot were scrapped, they now had nothing to fill it with and thus Johto and the anime as a whole had a huge drop in quality where they padded it with lots and lots of formulaic filler episodes instead of writing new plot.

Because the anime started to drag, a number of people probably lost interest in the series when they otherwise might not have, causing viewership to drop and both the Celebi and Latios movies having incredibly low viewer turnouts. Because they were no longer watching the show they were less interested in the franchise as a while and moved on to other things.

I'm sure there were other reasons why people stopped watching Pokémon, but I suspect that Johto's middle season being almost nothing but inconsequential padding turned off at least some people.

I'd argue the movies lost traction after The Latios movie. The one thing that Pokemon movies have going for it is the strong Art Direction.

Heroes is end of an era desu. It's still "original series" as Bulbapedia terms it, still the original voice cast (no I'm not going to sit through 90 minutes of subs, sue me), still the original cast of characters, the story is good, the art and animation are# great... I get a bit of sad nostalgia from the end credits sequences of the older Pokémon films as they remind me of when life was a lot simpler but Heroes really hurts me because in many ways it coincides with the end of Pokémania, ushering in Gen III.

I mean, I still love the franchise! But it's as if this is the moment it stopped being quite as magical. Last time I watched Heroes, it really hit me hard what it represents to me as a fan.
