I don't know the entire history of monster catchers, but I do know that being serious was something that existed before Pokemon, including having excessive violence. The question is why was Pokemon the kiddy version of that? Basically, Tajiri is just like a lot of people today in that he thinks his childhood is better than anything and wanted everyone to have the same kind of childhood he did, although that is impossible. It was childish from start to finish, disregarding all features of monster catchers at the time to satisfy his wants over everything else. They are entitled to that, but I still believe that they missed something by totally ignoring an established formula. Did all others follow this formula? I can't be certain. Some of them started out as having a solid premise, and others were plainly just toy selling schemes. If they had more faith that people would grow beyond childish nonsense, I can't tell. The only thing that matters to me is if it's coherent. All of the other monster franchises are more coherent than Pokemon, simply because most of them have a central narrative associated to them. Pokemon never had that, they just waved cute little creatures and hoped no one would notice.
