I liked Iris and Dent, they were a refreshing change from Brock + Coordinator, and dumb Ash was loose and funny.
XY is a return to form but also a return to formula. And unlike BW, it had even less of a lasting legacy on the franchise because Ash only took home three Pokemon, no trophy, no girlfriend and little in the way of impressive feats.
If anything, Kalos' greatest contribution to the franchise is making Pikachu even more of a god than ever before. Before the Tobias fight, Pikachu had less focus in DP than infernape and was somewhat forgotten because Ash gave a lot of attention to his entire DP team. XY gave Pikachu new feats, boosting the power of Iron Tail due to the new Fairy type, having him maul Mega Lucario and Gyarados and busting two pseudos in the row, including his bitch Metagross.
