I hate to say it but I think Digimon's way of evolving might better.
Doesn't it suck that you need to say goodbye forever to your cute shouldermon for it to reach its maximum power? So much so that in the anime they cant even let the likes of pikachu evolve which always leaves the annoying feeling of unfulfilled potential. Losing Dawns Piplup forever would be too much of a loss, but you cant deny that it becoming Empoleon would also be beyond awesome.
What Im getting at is that the digimon evolution system lets you have your cake and eat it too. You can keep your cutiepie buddies forever while they can temporarly change into badasses when required: just imagine Piplup going super sayan into Empoleon during battle and reverting back into a cutie after its done.
