They didn’t show any of Ash’s old Pokemon in XY. This is key why I think XY takes place at the end of the timeline: no references to older generations.
Also, even if they did we could chulk it up as them just showing an old mon and that’s it.

Could have learned about Megas in Gen 8 region. Look, XY rarely ever brings up the older seasons and it ended on a note that seemed to have wraped up the entire anime franchise. It makes sense.

I think what happened was the writers wanted to end Ash’s journey with XY which is why it feels so fragmented towards the end (Ash losing the League when he clearly had it)

The writers have no control over Ash's journey ending, that's in The Pokemon Company's hands. And the league was a complete afterthought. Battles were skipped and they rushed through everything so they could get to the Team Flare finale.

What? DP is the literal end of the anime as we know it. BW was a hard reset and bombed. XY followed BW and didn't really connect to other series much. DP should have been Ash's final series with a new protag in BW. Tobias is the only reason why Ash didn't win the league in DP.

Of course they are "connected". But there is a clear difference between the continuity of OS-DP than BW-XY. Ash's development as a trainer peaked in DP, then magically disappeared in BW. Then magically reappeared in XY. BW was an obvious reset to the anime, with the only connection being Dawn and Cynthia's cameo.

BW tried being the reset but that obviously failed. So they tried doing everything to connect it back to the previous seasons: Dawn (Cynthia's an oddball just because she was in the games as well), Charizard, that whole Butterfree episode and so on. If they didn't try the reset I figure BW would have been handled better.
