Pretty sure my brother could correctly identify many of them and he hasn't played since Gen 2. My mother as well, were she not dead and she only played Red once for like an hour in 1999.
Games are learning tools. to not learn them makes no sense. If you're not learning you're just doing interactive art. In which case it's just as well to go with choose your own adventure books for as much as the game matters to you.
