It's called futureproofing, OP.
They made these animations in case they ever needed to be used in the future and were too lazy to delete the unused ones from the Alola Games once they got done testing the animations.
Case in point, LGPE using the exact same walking and running animations that went unused in the Alola Games for Following Pokemon.

How were they planning to implement all the main-series characters into Ranger? I'd love to see the reasons behind it.
