FE was still niche during Melee's time period and most FE didin't really like him because again he's a shit character in his own game and high level Melee players hate him beacuse he's not top tier. All it took was a few years, a couple memes, a no call no show for Brawl, a rather surprising gay male community, and Awakening opening the doors for casuals/normies/whatever for him to shoot up in popularity. If you think Sakurai adding a bunch of FE characters has anything to do with this your horribly misguided. Roy's not even the only example he's just the best.
