Taking into account things he's said and done and also how the Japanese are and business and game development in general is, I don't understand how the brand or Masuda himself would get anything out of him stepping down in this way.
The only thing I can think of is that he truly believed 100% in everything he ever said. That he truly believed this is what we wanted. But he understood our logic and has even argued across interviews for both points of view. Back to back in different questions, recently. That tells you somewhere deep down he knew he wasn't right so that can't have been it.
I can't begin to fathom what the fuck has been going on with all of this.
