Though to be technical I don't just try, I do. Just can't use more than 1 or 2 and you need to build the rest of the team around them. With even a decent understanding of the meta it's not terribly hard if you take the time. Took me a month to set up my first Gen 6 team using Machamp, for example. But once I had it, I had over a 92% win rate and won the first 41 in a row.
Though the first two sadly can't really work well outside triples. They work best when you have a powerful seeming decoy the opponent will want to target down you don't actually care about in the middle while they set up.
