Truth is, no type is really the defacto magic type anymore, psychic was at some point but both psychic and fairy share that position now, and gamefreak makes a magic pokemon psychic (delphox, hoopa) or fairy (mega audino, magearna) depending on how they feel about it at the moment. People might try to give you overly-specific reasons as to why a typing and not the other but deep down it's all yet another "haha I don't know" situation and you all know it.
If you want my opinion, if mimikyu can be a ghost/fairy so can mismagius, and if hoopa can be a ghost/psychic, so can mismagius too. I'm biased and think maggie would fit the psychic typing better, but fairy is the obvious better choice if you love mismagius and want it to be better. We all know how ghost/psychic types without multiscale clones end up in the current meta.
