Too much water unironically.
Imagine if instead of boring water routes with nothing we had more complex land routes with caves and Pokemon variety. East Hoenn was a mistake

Fun region until the 7th gym onwards. The water routes are boring as hell and have no variety in trainers at all. Dive is the only thing that saved them.

My favorite region. I thought the water routes were great and added more of an adventure feeling for the region. There could have been more diversity regrading water types

I think Hoenn strikes the best balance between new and old Pokemon for a small Pokedex, being roughly 2:1
Region design is fine, I think the water meme is overblown

ORAS should have had a large Pokedex (350) because coming from BW2 and XY, ORAS' Pokedex felt tiny again. Even a few lines of Gen IV+ Pokemon would have fleshed out the Aqua/Magma/Elite Four teams and added some variety to the water onslaught late game.

it had the right amount of water. It just failed to make it diverse enough in terms of PKMN.

gen3 needed 2 dozen more sea-creatures (not necessarily Water types mind you) that flesh out the fauna of the water and underwater routes and distinguish them from one another.
