Even Shakespeare self-inserted in his works. The reason why it's gotten such a bad rep in the past 20 years is because there are a lot of boring people out there that want to be the stars of their own works. I can't speak for ShockSlayer but he looks like a typical twig-boy autist with a severe lack of female companionship.
As for the patreon stuff, it's justified. He's found a legal way to make money off of his (exceedingly average?) ROM hack, and if people pay for it, that's cool. I can't hate him for it, it's a viable way to make a passive income. Sam Hyde still does this stuff too (granted, a far better creator of anything), I'm not gonna say it's shady to want to have people pay for what you make, in fact, it's probably better for a creator standpoint because what you do create is not tampered by some other people that are paying you.
Stolen code is a big deal though. When this happens, SHTF big time but it'll be funny to see egg on this guy's face if it ends up actually being true. Stolen code just as in Nintendo, right?
