How would you buff Hail, /vp/? In order to make it an actual team archetype and probably make more Ice-types menacing under it

The only difference between Hail and Sandstorm is the stat buff that comes with it
Rock types get a boost on Sp. Def, maybe something like that can work on ice types, but I wonder if it would be broken given that Blizzard can't miss during Hail

Realistic answer: hail boosts the defense of ice types by 50%. You may have seen this suggested seven million times but it genuinely is a well-rounded and sensible buff to the weather and typing as a whole.

Just-for-shit-and-giggles answer: hail has a 10% chance to freeze all non-ice pokemon on the field at the end of every turn (fails on non-ice types that take no damage from hail, like overcoat or magic guard mons).

I think this would work pretty well.

I was about to complain about serene grace + blizzard in hail being unreasonably strong (110 damage ice type attack that cant miss with 40% chance to freeze in hail) but checking the serene grace list it seems the only things with that ability that can learn blizzard have garbage special attack (chansey, blissey and dunsparce).

Hardly, the defense bonus would only apply to ice types in hail and I cannot think of a single ice type that becomes amazing with aurora veil up.

Not to mention brick break can be learned by basically everything ever and is super effective against ice types and removes veil.

Hail now gives Ice types a Tinted Lens effect on their Ice-type moves. Now they can freely spam their Ice type moves without being impeded by Water/Fire/Steel types.
It improves an Ice type's offensive role without being OP or giving them the crazy ability to stack Aurora Veil on top of a free Defense boost.
Fixed.

Also Kyurem Black would be fucking terrifying under Hail with Defense boost, it basically lives two Stone Edges from Lando T without defense investment at all

The difference between Hail and the other 3 weathers is that Hail only buffs Ice types. Rain buffs Electric and Flying with Thunder and Hurricane. While also giving everything a resistance to Fire. Sand doesn't hit Steel and Ground types. Fire buffs Grass types with Chlorophyll and Solarbeam and makes everything resist water type. Hail only helps Ice types. Aurora Veil is the exception but is so generic it helps everything to the point where you run a team in spite of the hail and don't care if the hail leaves right after you set up the Veil. To fix Hail, other types need to be immune to Hail damage and more types need to benefit from it. It also needs its Excadrill/Megapert/Venusaur- that one mon that can really sweep with Slush Rush.

this is retarded as fuck. freeze is balanced around being rare, there's very little actual counterplay to it. this is more likely to create rb-esque freeze wars between non-ice types (+abomasnow) or get snow warning banned than actually make hail/ice types better

even if you only get one freeze at a time it's a risk-free chance to swing any game. sleep has a timer to wake up, and requires you to use a (usually inaccurate) move that ONLY causes sleep. your hail changes give you a possibly permanent stun (there's a decent chance you don't get to thaw before being KO'd because there's no maximum freeze time) with the same odds as getting a scald burn.

the fact that you'd have to bring back a rule that hasn't been enforced since pbr and po doesn't set off any red flags for you?

spore does nothing but sleep, ice beam does damage. there's risk involved using any sleep move, especially if it can miss, while there's none using ice beam because ice beam will at least also do damage. it's the difference between wisp and scald, except scald just burns you while ice beam can stun you for the duration of a game (doubly so for battle spot/vgc because they don't last nearly as long)

There's actually more counterplay than any other status. Water's most broken moves, Scald and Steam Eruption, not only have the highest burn % of any move not named Will-o-Wisp and Sacred Fire, they thaw a frozen user.
