It was also very unfinished. Many FX shots were early renders. Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu is very weird.

I'd have more questions if I actually played the game, but I guess for now, how was the humor? Are all references in-universe, how normie-tier vs. deep do they get, and does Ryan Reynolds or anyone else break the 4th wall?

Not a huge Pokemon fan myself, but I hear you with the source material. The movie, like many Hollywood efforts to adapt something they really don't appreciate or understand, is a hodgepodge of tone and derivative of other movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Ironically felt like The Super Mario Brothers movie from 1993. This is aparently the first time Nintendo has licensed out their property since the Mario movie. Unfortunately I think America has fumbled once again. There's stuff that's very much in-universe references but at the same time they're rebuilding it entirely to create some kind of new live action cinematic universe. It felt like the combination of so many movies, and weirdly unoriginal. I live in LA and got on an invite list at some point. I think it's pretty easy to get on them if you live here.

I also think it's funny how Hollywood looks at this character profile and casts a black kid to play the part. LOL! So racist toward white people. They also made a point to say "Woman and Men" instead of "Men and woman" every time they talked about the crew that worked on the film. All they care about is following the politically correct trends.

It opens with Mewtwo breaking out of a lab and then we meet Tim and his friend (who is played by an Indian guy LOL!) where they attempt to create the vibe of the original Pokemon with the characters looking to catch one. I was just so distracted by the casting it was hard to pay attention to what was happening a lot of the time. Tim goes looking for his father, finds Pikachu and huffs some kind of purple gas that allows him to hear Pikachu talk like a human. Then it kind of turns into a PG rated Deadpool movie with Reynolds dropping lame jokes for 90 minutes. The stuff with Mewtwo was kind of cool. I don't want to give away too much though. If you're huge fans, you should definitely see it when it comes out.

They're just hitting check marks for diversity. Ryan Reynolds already covered white unlike in the game so they figured they could make the kid black. Indian covers the South Asian market. I'm sure there's some East Asian person in there or if not it's an East Asian sourced movie anyway. There's Carlos or whatever his name was that covers Latino.

There's plenty of Pokemon in the film. There's a big battle in an arena at one point too. Good diversity of Pokemon show up in the movie so that should please a lot of fans. SPOILERS: It ends with Mewtwo (maybe turning back into normal Mew -I'm not really sure, like I said I don't follow Pokemon) There's a villainous effort to merge people with their Pokemon but they thwart the villain's plans and we find out Ryan Reynolds (who shows up in person at the end) is in fact Tim's father). That was also a real stretch to accept as one is hardcore Caucasian male and the other is African American. Beyond the race issue Justice Smith was just irritating as the lead. There's one point where he's screaming as he goes over a ledge and it's truly one of the grossest vocal sounds I think I've ever heard in my life. There's also a part where a bunch of Bulbasaurs come and save Pikachu. There's also a part where a bunch of gigantic turtle style Pokemon move some land masses kind of like Morla in Neverending Story. I'm sure that part will look cool when all the FX work is complete.

and probably the last for a while, because this will bomb hard. Seems like one of those Alvin and the Chipmunks/Smurfs/Yogi Bear live action/cartoon hybrid dogshit crap movies.
