He was most likely intended to be the Dragon type trial captain but scrapped him last minute
My thoughts were since Poni Island didn't have a Kahuna anymore (Until Hapu came along), there wasn't a need for a trial captain anymore (In SM Mina didn't have one until USUM)

Some think he might be a hint at the next region but doubt it.

But the main conclusion is that he's simply there to be the Dragon trainer of the game since all the other characters focus in a type.

Literally they needed to do was give Gladion a focus on Ice-types (he has a cold personality so fuck it it would work) and have him give you an Ice Z-Crystal he was given by Kukui or something.

even though they're not from Alola, Sina and Dexio kinda fill the Ice an Psychic role since Dexio only uses Psychic types and Sina only used Ice, I never saw Faba as the Psychic trainer desu.

Lillie is the worst fucking partner. I got to team up with Guzma shortly after and it was against some no-name grunt. Why couldn't he back me up in the fight that mattered?
