All these fucks crying there's no more SMD, Ranger or similar are as much to blame as they weren't buying the recent games enough to warrant making more. TPCi moved onto making mobile-orientated games, where they would usually release a spin-off the year before a new Core game releases on the new hardware to entice early adoption of said new system. Game Freak themselves suddenly spitting out a game that functions like a spin-off (indeed lifting mechanics and inspirations with Pokémon GO - as well as a tie-in) while simultaneously making pains to call Gen VIII a new core game, that it will be like their previous paired, upper and remake versions of past games (subtly changing the classification of those games to Core at the same time) and stressing it won't be like LGEP.
The fact of the matter is, whatever way you slice it, this game will do perfectly adequately for what it's intended to do - entice early adoption of the Switch in preparation of the new games to come next year.
