Most of the kids would spew annoying lies to waste each other's time so anyone who wasn't poor just bought the strategy guides and/or a gameshark.

I honestly don't know how I managed to beat Red with almost no help. I figure I must have had my brother do Cinnabar Mansion because there's no way I did that myself. Blind determination got me through a Flash-less Rock Tunnel, Silph Co and Sabrina's gym

Pokemon emerald was released in 2004. If we consider adolescence to be after childhood, the oldest he could be when it came out would be 11. Born in 1993. Easily into gen Y.

Also human generations are just something invented by marketing teams to easily categorize potential demographics.
