Greninja on the other hand has proven to be pretty much iconic, though: Stupidly positive early reception to the point that it had a higher pick-rate than Charizard did while also placing at the top in most polls even before appearances; went from most popular of its gen to flat-out popular pokemon after Smash reveal (with positive reception, mind you), got shilled in the anime and became the Japs and the Spics favorite even though the latter hadn't given a shit about the anime in over a decade and it even was and still is prominent in Gen 7 advertising and merchandise (was one of the main reps of that Yokai March special last month). He's one of the few modern pokemon that can stand toe to toe with some Gen 1 pokemon. Maybe not Charizard, Mewtwo or Pikachu tier, but he's pretty iconic. I'm sure he'd be at least in the all-time Top 20 if there were to be a huge poll about that nowadays.
